Digitalization and the preservation of historical and
documentary heritage - as per tradition, the International Summer School for
Young Archivists has opened in Astana this summer. More than 100 early-career
professionals from Kazakhstan and abroad have gathered to discuss current
industry issues, exchange experience, and take part in lectures, workshops,
training sessions, and joint projects. Special focus is placed on the
integration of digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and machine
learning into archival work. Over the past eight years, the school has trained
more than 1,200 young specialists.
«This year, at the National Kurultai, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev
raised the issue of establishing a national digital archive. The theme of the
summer school closely reflects this initiative. Today, our archive’s reading
room operates in digital format, offering convenience for both visitors and
researchers. Our collection includes over 1.5 million archival documents,» said
Aliya Mustafina, Director of the Kazakh President’s Archive.
«A major project is currently under discussion, dedicated to
Kazakhstan’s contribution during World War II. A vast collection of documents
and archival materials is preserved in both Russian and Kazakh archives,
highlighting Kazakhstan’s significant role in the victory over Nazism. A
comprehensive historical and documentary publication on this topic is now in
preparation. This summer school also offers broad opportunities for archival
studies, digital records management, and joint research between Russia and
Kazakhstan,» said Olga Pavlenko, Vice-Rector for Scientific and Project Work at
the Russian State University for the Humanities.
