For the first time in its history, Uzbekistan’s
national football team has qualified for the final stage of the 2026 World Cup.
The final match of the qualifying round was held in Tashkent between the teams
of Uzbekistan and Qatar. The Central Asian country’s athletes opened the
scoring in the first half and sealed the victory with a third goal at the end
of the second, winning 3–0. Uzbekistan competed in Group A of the third
qualifying round. Over the course of nearly a year, the national team faced off
against Iran, Qatar, the UAE, the Kyrgyz Republic, and North Korea. The Uzbek
players earned a total of 21 points - a record in the country’s football
history. Moreover, Uzbekistan secured their spot at the World Cup ahead of
schedule.
«It felt like weightlessness, as if we had
been in space. We’re immensely grateful to the fans who came to support us,» shared
the goalkeeper of Uzbekistan’s national team Utkir Yusupov.
The national team’s players and coaches were
honored with state awards. The President of Uzbekistan presented the players
with orders, medals, and honorary titles.
