Kazakhstan will receive 922 million cubic
meters of water from Uzbekistan via the Dostyk interstate canal in the upcoming
irrigation period. The corresponding agreement was reached at the 86th meeting
of the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination (ICWC) in Shymkent. Experts
note that local farmers are provided with a stable water supply for the
irrigation season. Notably, Kazakhstan has already received about four billion
cubic meters of water. Farmers in the Turkistan region are collecting a
bountiful harvest and are hopeful for a successful second crop. As of today,
the Shardara reservoir holds 2.6 billion cubic meters of water, which is 600
million cubic meters more than the previous year.
«Currently, the average
water inflow is 125 cubic meters per second. We direct 650
cubic meters of water per second to the lower reaches of the Syr Darya River,» said
Yermek Issa, deputy head of the Shardara production site of the Kazvodkhoz
branch in the Turkistan region.
«Previously, we faced
some challenges. This year, there’s plenty of water, and
people are satisfied. We had a good water supply in the winter and delivered it
on time in the summer. We have completed one harvest and are now irrigating the
second crop,» noted farmer Tolepbergen Artykov.
