May 20 was ploclaimed as World
Metrology Day and given the official United Nations (UN) status. The Natural
Sciences Commission unanimously adopted a resolution, initiated by Kazakhstan at
the 42nd session of the UNESCO General Conference in Paris. The official
holiday was established by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures.
The date commemorates the adoption of the Metric Convention in Paris in 1875,
one of the world’s oldest international treaties in force, aimed at ensuring
the unity of metrological standards worldwide. Permanent Delegate of Kazakhstan
to UNESCO Askar Abdrakhmanov noted that the decision would enhance the
authority of this important scientific discipline and bring additional
attention to the significance of developing metrology worldwide. The resolution
was co-sponsored by 43 member states of the international organization.
“We are proud to have a strong and competent community of metrology professionals here in Kazakhstan, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of the oldest Kazakh metrological institution this year and makes its worthy contribution to the development of this discipline at the national, regional and global levels,” Abdrakhmanov said.
