The United Nations (UN) General
Assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution on the rehabilitation of the
Semipalatinsk region. The document calls on the international community to join
Kazakhstan in developing and implementing programs for the treatment of
affected residents, the restoration of the environment, and the region’s economic
development. The UN General Assembly adopted the resolution for the eleventh
time, which was co-sponsored by 85 UN member states. As noted by the Kazakh
Foreign Ministry, the document underlines global concern about the consequences
of nuclear tests for the lives and health of people in the Semipalatinsk region,
particularly children. The resolution acknowledges the important role of the
country’s government in allocating domestic resources to address the needs of
the region.
