Tokayev calls for extraordinary presidential elections this autumn

During his annual state-of-the-nation address, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev proposed holding extraordinary presidential elections this autumn. The Head of State noted that the new mandate of people’s confidence is necessary for successful implementation of drastic and all-round reforms on the way to building fair Kazakhstan. The president stressed that interests of the state come first for him. Furthermore, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev proposed to reconsider the number and duration of president’s terms of office.

“After many contemplations, I have come to the conclusion that there is a necessity to review the number and duration of president’s terms of office.  I propose to establish a single seven-year presidential term without the right for reelection,” the president said.
