In Kazakhstan,
the nationwide vote will embody the concept of a listening state, where the
decision of every citizen is important. The significance of President
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's initiative to hold a national referendum on the
construction of a nuclear power plant was emphasized by Senate Speaker Maulen
Ashimbayev at a meeting with residents of the Almaty region. Also, members of
the People's Headquarters in support of the construction of a NPP, including
MPs, experts, and public figures, arrived in the region.
They visited
the Green Land Alatau greenhouse and discussed energy supply for domestic
enterprises. Notably, Kazakhstan's energy sector strongly depends on coal-fired
power plants, which are 70 percent deteriorated. The meeting participants
agreed that a reliable and safe energy source is necessary for the country's
stable development. The members of the Headquarters also toured the Kapshagai
hydroelectric power plant (HPP), discussing with specialists the prospects for the
energy sector development in Kazakhstan.
