Kazakh school student Damir Sarbassov has taught a computer to understand the state language. A 12th-grade student at the Nazarbayev Intellectual School in Kostanai was the first to develop a programming language in Kazakh. Work on the project commenced last summer, and the process has been far from easy. However, the very idea that his development opens up opportunities for all those who want to learn programming motivates him to continue working, according to the teenager. Notably, many others had previously tried unsuccessfully to integrate the Kazakh language into such systems.
«I suddenly had an idea about why everyone, including those who don’t know English, should learn it just to start programming. This seemed strange to me. So, I came up with this idea of creating a programming language that would allow people to code in Kazakh. This way, more people will be able to use it, and at the same time, this language will not only improve programming skills but also enhance knowledge of the Kazakh language,» said school student Damir Sarbassov.
«We are advancing digitalization, and secondly, we are developing the Kazakh language. Currently, nearly all university programs, regardless of their focus, include programming education in the first years of study. In President Tokayev’s state-of-the-nation address, there is a particular emphasis on developing these skills—Hard skills, Soft skills, and specifically learning programming as a second literacy,» noted computer science teacher Alexandr Shertser.
Educational institutions and IT specialists have already recognized the value of the project that the high school student hopes to integrate into the school curriculum. This would enable students to easily master programming while also learning their native language.
