President Tokayev meets SCO Secretary-General

On the sidelines of the Boao Forum for Asia, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met with Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Zhang Ming to exchange views on improving the Organization’s effectiveness. President Tokayev highlighted utmost importance Kazakhstan attaches to the upcoming SCO summit in Astana, which will focus on strengthening multilateral dialogue. He emphasized that Kazakhstan views the SCO as an effective mechanism for stimulating regional security processes, trade and economic cooperation, as well as cultural and humanitarian exchange. For his part, Zhang Ming noted Kazakhstan’s significant contribution to developing the Organization’s potential.

“I think that we must stay together because the upcoming summit is extremely important bearing in mind the current geopolitical situation and I think that the whole world will be watching the summit following its decisions and so on. And as I understand all heads of state are supposed to come to Astana to attend the summit. As a host country Kazakhstan will be doing our utmost in order to make sure that the summit will be successful,” Tokayev said.

“Thank you, Mr. President. I appreciate that the great efforts are made by our rotating chair Kazakhstan and also, the great importance attached by your excellency to the SCO. It is expected that Astana summit will be another great success,” Zhang Ming noted.
