Astana once again served as the venue for a meeting on
Syria. The 22nd round of international talks was held in the Kazakh capital.
They concluded successfully, noted Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister Alibek
Bakayev. According to him, the initial goals of the talks were fully achieved,
including the establishment of de-escalation zones and the cessation of
tensions between the conflicting parties. These developments open up
significant opportunities for the restoration of normal life for Syrians.
Notably, 11 delegations participated in the Astana Process, including
representatives of the Syrian government and opposition, as well as the
guarantor countries—Russia, Türkiye and Iran—and international observers.
Following the talks, a joint statement was adopted. The guarantor countries
emphasized the leading role of the Astana Process in promoting the lasting
settlement of the Syrian issue. They also noted that the escalation of
conflicts in the Middle East negatively impacts the situation in the Syrian
Arab Republic. Overall, the parties reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to
Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity, and agreed
to convene the 23rd International Meeting on Syria in Astana in the first half
of 2025.
