President Tokayev holds series of meetings with executives of Chinese companies

During his working visit to Shanghai, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held a series of meetings with executives of leading Chinese companies. The parties discussed the implementation of joint projects. At a meeting with Lu Weibing, Partner and President of Xiaomi Corporation, the Head of State discussed cooperation in AI, cloud technologies, and digital platforms. The sides also discussed training Kazakh specialists to support AI systems, as well as the production of electric vehicles and batteries. The President reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s readiness to support the company’s initiatives aimed at expanding its operations in the country.

At a meeting with Pan Jian, Co-Chairman of the Board of CATL, President Tokayev welcomed the company’s plans to build a battery manufacturing plant in Kazakhstan. He emphasized that Kazakhstan has every opportunity to establish a full production cycle, from raw material processing to finished product manufacturing. CATL currently accounts for 40% of the global electric vehicle battery market.

President Tokayev also discussed projects aimed at strengthening Kazakhstan’s transport, logistics, and energy potential with Zhang Bingnan, President of China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC). The parties reviewed the construction of the Bakhty-Ayagoz railway line and the establishment of a dredging company for operations in the Caspian Sea. Tokayev also welcomed the signing of an agreement with the company on the joint development of Kazakhstan’s first 600-megawatt pumped-storage hydropower plant in the Almaty region.

Meanwhile, Guoyou Materials Industry Group plans to build a multimodal hub at Kazakhstan’s Kuryk port, with a first-phase throughput capacity of 15 million tonnes. President Tokayev discussed the project with the group’s Chairman, Yu Boyan. The hub will connect maritime and railway routes, while expanding Kazakhstan’s export and transit capabilities.
