Kazakh citizens are showing an active voter
turnout at the nationwide referendum on the construction of a nuclear power
plant. By 2 p.m. local time, over six million people had cast their votes,
accounting for nearly 52 percent of the total number of citizens registered and
eligible to vote.
«In accordance with
paragraph 2 of Article 31 of the Constitutional Law «On the National
Referendum,» the referendum is considered valid if more than half of eligible
voters participate,» said Sabila Mustafina, a member of the Central Referendum
Commission.
Kazakh citizens abroad
are also showing a high voter turnout at the NPP referendum, as reported by Kazakh
Deputy Foreign Minister Roman Vassilenko.
«To ensure the constitutional rights of our
citizens, 74 referendum polling stations have been established at Kazakhstan’s foreign
missions in 59 countries. The total number of voters is 12,307. Overall, I
would like to note that there is a high voter turnout among our citizens abroad,»
noted Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister Roman Vassilenko.
It is worth noting that the first polling
station to open today, as well as the last one to cease operations, are located
abroad. This is due to the fact that the countries are in different time zones.
Therefore, some polling stations will only open shortly.
«The first referendum polling station opened in
Tokyo today at 7:00 a.m. local time, which is 3:00 a.m. Astana time. Meanwhile, the last polling station to close will be
in San Francisco, U.S. This will take place on October 7 at 10:00 a.m. Astana
time,» said correspondent Zhenis Yermukanov.
