A metallurgical plant with an annual
capacity of three million tonnes of steel is set to be built in the Zhambyl
region. Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov discussed plans for the project
with Zeng Zhaoqiang, the chairman of Chinese company Fujian Hengwang
Investment. Set to begin construction in April, the plant will be located in the
Jibek Joly special economic zone (SEZ), with the total investment exceeding $1
billion. The plant will use domestic raw materials for production – natural
gas, iron ore, and lime. It will produce a wide range of products, including
reinforcement steel, steel for pipe production, as well as angle and profile
steel. Also, a gas turbine power plant with a capacity of 350 megawatts is
planned to be built to meet the needs of the metallurgical plant. According to
the investor, the plant will implement direct iron reduction technology. This
will increase the competitiveness of Kazakh metallurgical products. Bektenov
emphasized that the project will be an important step in increasing production
capacity and expanding the country’s export potential.
