New canals and reservoir to be built in Kyzylorda region

New water reservoir and a network of canals are planned to be built in the Kyzylorda region in Kazakhstan. According to the relevant ministry, the reconstruction of two hydraulic units and four structures, including dams and reservoirs, will also be carried out there. A project to modernize water intake stations is currently being implemented in the region. Additionally, automated water metering systems will be installed on five canals, with a total length of about 232 kilometers. This will allow for more efficient control and management of resources. Furthermore, the design and estimate documentation for the automation of another 16 main and inter-farm canals is already being developed. Water-saving systems are also being introduced in the region. Thanks to these systems, last year, agricultural producers saved about 200 million cubic meters of water.

«As a result of bilateral and trilateral talks with neighbouring countries and decisions made in 2024, the Shardara reservoir received more than 15 billion cubic meters of water. Of this amount, 4.8 billion cubic meters were supplied during the vegetation period, while 10.3 billion cubic meters during the non-irrigation season. Additionally, 2.6 billion cubic meters of water were directed into the Northern Aral Sea, compared to just 816 million cubic meters in 2022,» noted Galymzhan Kambarbekov, chief expert of the department, Kazakh Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.

Notably, new organizations for the operation and management of hydraulic structures have been established in the Kyzylorda region and eight other regions of Kazakhstan. Currently, there are 15 such institutions in the country. They are also designed to improve the efficiency of the water sector.
