This year, Nauryz in Kazakhstan is being celebrated in a digital format. Across the country, VR games inspired by traditional sports took place. The Uly Dala Oiyndary – the Games of the Great Steppe – have moved into virtual space, blending modern technology with respect for tradition and the competitive spirit of youth. In Oskemen, schoolchildren and students used special VR glasses to travel back in time, try archery, play assyk atu, and even master togyzkumalak. Traditional horse races were replaced by drone competitions, and many of the games were developed by the students themselves. In this way, Nauryz is becoming not just a celebration of tradition but also a platform for new ideas.
«It’s amazing to see this digitalization happening in Kazakhstan. Technology is advancing rapidly, and young people aren’t just being told about it – they’re given the chance to gain hands-on experience. And, of course, I would love the opportunity to operate large, stabilized drones,» said Margarita Khanzharova, IT Lyceum student.
«Our main goal today is to bring our culture to life
in virtual and augmented reality. We also want to give young people a strong
incentive and boost in IT development,» said Didar Muratuly, Director of Oskemen Hub.
