On May 1, Kazakhstan marks the Day of Unity of the People. Established in 1995, the holiday has underscored for more than three decades the importance of peace, mutual respect, and cultural dialogue in a multinational country. The establishment of this day at the national level carries particular significance. Interethnic harmony in the country - home to nearly 130 ethnic groups - remains a key priority of state policy. The Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan is being transformed into the Halyk Kenesi (People’s Council). This public institution will be granted the right of legislative initiative, bringing together representatives from all regions and ethnocultural associations.
«Today,
having adopted a new Constitution, we are moving toward a more advanced format
of work, as it is becoming a politically significant and influential body — the Halyk Kenesi. And, of course, the experience of
the Assembly will be taken into account within the Halyk Kenesi. Overall, I
would like to say that on the Day of Unity, it is important to emphasize that
the true binding element of peaceful coexistence under our common Kazakh
shanyrak is, in fact, the people of Kazakhstan themselves,» said Maxim
Rozhin, member of
the Mazhilis, the lower
house of
the Kazakh Parliament.
