Renowned Hollywood actor and
environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio congratulated the Government of Kazakhstan
on its successful preservation of the saiga antelope population. On his social
media account, DiCaprio described the recovery of these animals, which were on
the brink of extinction just two decades ago, as ‘unprecedented’. In 2005, the
saiga population in Kazakhstan numbered as few as 48,000, but it has now grown
to almost two million. It is worth noting that the International Union for
Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has also previously acknowledged Kazakhstan’s
accomplishments in the conservation of saiga populations.
