Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are expanding
their cooperation on transboundary water management by agreeing to automate
water accounting in the Syr Darya River. The agreement includes the
installation of modern monitoring systems at ten key sections of the river
basin – five in Kazakhstan and five in Uzbekistan – to track water loss and
leakage, ensuring more efficient use of this critical resource. Both countries
have developed the technical specifications for the project and are negotiating
with international financial organizations for support.
«The German International Cooperation
Society (GIZ) is involved in this work. Last year, they completed the technical
task for us, which was also agreed upon with the Kazakh side. Now we are
waiting for the approval of the Uzbek side,» noted Saule Temirbulatova, head of
the Water Cooperation Department for Central Asia at the International
Cooperation Department, Kazakh Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.
