Kazakhstan to fully meet its electricity needs by 2029

Kazakhstan aims to fully meet its domestic electricity demand by 2029. To achieve this, the country plans to commission 68 projects with a capacity of 6.7 GW. This year alone, more than 621 MW will be added to the national grid, including 455 MW from nine renewable energy facilities. Another eight green projects are expected to launch in 2026, 13 in 2027, and three in 2028. The Ministry of Energy announced this at a government meeting and noted that artificial intelligence is being actively considered for use in the industry. Memoranda have already been signed with the Astana Hub technopark for the testing of AI solutions, two of which have demonstrated strong results. The Prime Minister issued a number of important instructions, including the introduction of a unified management system for the fuel and energy sector by the end of the year.

«This system is aimed at ensuring the reliability of energy facilities through online monitoring. The Ministries of Energy, Artificial Intelligence, and Finance are tasked with launching the industry information security center by the end of 2026 and ensuring the operation of an information and communications infrastructure operator for the fuel and energy sector. This system is designed to protect all energy sector entities from cyber threats. Digitalization is a key tool not only for improving energy efficiency but also for ensuring the reliability of the electric power industry,» said Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov.
