Kazakhstan’s transport sector grows 24% since start of 2025

Kazakhstan plans to restore 13,000 kilometers of roads and more than 6,000 kilometers of railways this year. Reconstruction and repair work is already underway on some sections of highways, including Aktobe-Ulgaisyn and Karagandy-Zhezkazgan. It is planned to build Center-West highway, which will shorten transit routes from Astana to the Aktau port. This was discussed at a government meeting on major investment projects in the sector. In the first half of the year, work is expected to be completed on the Kyzylzhar-Moiynty section. At the same time, efforts are focused on preserving existing roadways in line with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s directive last year. Additionally, automatic vehicle measurement systems are being installed to detect axle overloads and protect the road surface from damage. A total of 126 sensors are planned for installation.

«It is now standard practice to include these automatic measurement systems in every project. What are they used for? They are necessary for automatic measurement of the overall and weight parameters of freight transport. If there are violations, excess of the axle load, this data will be sent to the International Road Assessment Programme (IRAP) system and vehicle owners will be fined accordingly,» said KazAvtoZhol National Company Chairman Darkhan Imanashev.

Additional initiatives include deepening the seafloor at the Aktau port, scheduled to begin next month. The upgrade will allow the port to receive more ships and enhance its competitiveness. As part of Kazakhstan’s merchant fleet development, eight new ships are also set to be acquired.
