Kazakhstan set a record volume of
grain supplies to China in 2023. The export of wheat, barley, legumes,
flaxseeds, and sunflower seeds by rail exceeded 2.226 million tonnes, according
to the ElDala.kz portal. The figure increased by almost 50 percent compared to
the previous maximum, recorded in 2019, when it surpassed one million tonnes.
Analysts attribute these results to several factors. This includes an increase
in deliveries through covered wagons and container trains. In this case, the
train carries only one type of cargo, allowing for faster processing and
unloading at the destination. Additionally, grain carriers have resumed
transporting agricultural products from Kazakhstan to China. According to
experts, a new record could be achieved in 2024 due to the capabilities of the
two border crossings, namely ‘Dostyk - Alashankou’ and ‘Altynkol - Khorgos’.
With the current infrastructure, China can potentially receive up to five
million tonnes of Kazakh agricultural products through these two railway links.
