Assembly of People of Kazakhstan elected nine members to the Mazhilis, the Lower House of the Kazakh Parliament. Election commission summarized the results. A current member of the sixth Mazhilis from the Assembly Sauytbek Abdrakhmanov got the highest number of votes. 298 people voted for him out of the total 351 of Assembly’s members who took part in the electoral process. President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has also voted. The first president of the country, Chairperson of the Assembly, Nursultan Nazarbayev, cast his vote as well. When compiling the list of candidates, several criteria were taken into account, including the continuity of the member corps, regional coverage, ensuring gender equality and rotation of ethnic groups.
“There is such a thing: we have very delicate and tactful relations within the Assembly. Therefore, we nominate nine people. At the same time, we have a rotation of representatives of ethno-cultural associations. Preference will be given to ethnic groups that have never been elected before, such as kurds and dungans. The Secretariat attaches great importance to this,” said Vladimir Bozhko, Deputy Chairperson of Mazhilis.
