Kazakhstan’s army to introduce military reservists

Kazakhstan is set to establish a military reserve force composed of civilians who will gain military status during training and exercises. The Senate, the upper house of Parliament, has approved the relevant amendments to the military service law. About 2,000 people from all over the country are expected to be recruited at the initial stage. At the same time, reservists will be able to sign a three-year contract on a voluntary basis. The reserve officers up to 57 years old, soldiers and sergeants up to 47, will also be included in the recruitment for a minimum monthly wage while their job and position will be retained. Combat training will last no more than 60 days a year. The state budget will cover all associated costs. Service locations will be chosen based on the reservist’s place of residence. The Ministry of Defense believes this approach will motivate citizens to join the reserve.

«First, it is the moral motivation of every citizen and the fulfillment of their constitutional duty to defend their homeland. Second, we understand that every man is always proud to serve in the army, being a defender of his home, family, and country as a whole. This is also motivating. Third, they will be assigned to military units based on the territorial principle, meaning they won't have to leave their place of residence,» said Sultan Kamaletdinov, Kazakh First Deputy Minister of Defense and Chief of the General Staff of Kazakhstan’s Armed Forces.

«Reservists will receive full medical care, meals, and one-time compensation in case of injury. Provisions are made for the annual indexation of pension payments for length of service appointed since January 1, 2016. Law enforcement officers with sufficient length of service are granted the right to pension payments after their contracts expire,» noted member of Senate Sergei Yershov.
