Kazakhstan has ratified the
Convention on the Management of Transboundary Rivers. The corresponding law was
signed by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The international document
represents a global legal mechanism ensuring fair and sustainable management of
transboundary rivers, lakes, and associated groundwater worldwide. To date, 37
countries, including neighboring Uzbekistan, are parties to the convention.
Members of the Mazhilis, a Lower House of the Kazakh Parliament, are
deliberating on a draft of a new Water Code aimed at ensuring responsible water
usage for sustainable economic development. Also, responsibility for violations
in the water sector is being tightened at the legislative level.
