Single-industry towns could become growth drivers of Kazakhstan’s economy

Industrial zones will be established this year in the cities of Balkhash, Kulsary, Satpayev, and Khromtau. A ferroalloy plant worth approximately 140 billion tenge will also be constructed in Ekibastuz. During a working trip to the Karagandy region, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov chaired a national seminar-meeting on the development of single-industry towns. He noted that, in line with the President's directive, efforts have been undertaken to modernize the socio-economic development of these settlements. As a result, single-industry towns have been categorized into three groups, with specific priority measures identified for each. These include upgrading engineering and social infrastructure, launching investment projects in the fields of information technology, agriculture, tourism, and science, as well as establishing industrial and small-scale production zones. Currently, there are 20 single-industry towns in the country, collectively accounting for more than one-third of total industrial output.

«We can build hospitals, schools, stadiums, and other social facilities in every city, but without jobs, people won’t stay. That’s why attracting investors and creating the right  conditions for them is essential. We should offer them vacant buildings and land plots and support the development of new production facilities. Without such measures, there will be no progress. That’s why attracting investors is the top priority. We’ve seen some results in cities like Saran, Ekibastuz, and others, but more active efforts are needed in this direction,» Bektenov said.

In the Karagandy region, the Prime Minister reviewed the implementation of the President's directives on the development of industry, housing and utilities, and the agro-industrial complex. He visited enterprises located in the Saran industrial zone, along with several other production facilities in the region. Bektenov also examined ongoing efforts to ensure worker safety at a local mine. Particular attention was given to projects in the energy and agricultural sectors. The Prime Minister instructed the Ministry of Industry and Construction, in cooperation with relevant agencies, to ensure the sustainable utilization of production capacities and the development of the entire value chain in related industries.
