Kazakhstan became the first CIS
country to join the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) program
on sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). This means that Kazakhstan intends to
conduct flights without emitting pollutants into the environment. The parties
have signed a corresponding agreement. Notably, the ICAO has set the goal of
achieving net-zero emissions from international flights by 2050.
“According to this program, the ICAO will
assist Kazakhstan in developing sustainable aviation fuel, conducting relevant
training, as well as providing information and international experience for
further development of this initiative in the country. This agreement,
the first of its kind for a CIS country, represents a significant step forward
in the development of civil aviation for Kazakhstan,” said Adlet Kobenov, head of
the International Air Traffic Regulation Department of the Civil Aviation
Committee at the Kazakh Ministry of Transport.
Under the document, the ICAO will provide
technical assistance to Kazakhstan on SAF-related issues in national action
plans, and implementation of specific SAF projects.
