Another of our short-track athletes Denis Nikisha performed at a distance of 500 meters in the final, where medals were not awarded. His rivals in the race were Chinese Wu Dajing, Russian Pavel Sitnikov and Latvian Roberts Kruzbergs. Kazakhstan took the third place.

“I did my best. I tried to take the medal place. But, first of all, I wanted to prove that Kazakhs are engaged not only in wrestling and boxing, which is a  stereotype many have, but also in winter sports,” Azhgaliyev said.

34 Kazakh residents take part in the quadrennial Games. They compete in nine sports. The Norwegian national team is in the lead in the medal standings. There are 21 medals in the country's piggy bank. Germany is in the second place. The US and the Netherlands follow. The Winter Olympics in Beijing will last until February 20.
