Kazakhstan is taking measures to protect
against the consequences of spring floods. 56 flood control projects are
underway in 84 settlements across several regions of the country, with a total population
of 580,000 people. The initiatives involve the construction of dams with a
total length of 310 kilometres. To date, nearly half of the work has been
completed. At the same time, an analysis of the state of hydraulic structures is
being conducted in Kazakhstan.
«To eliminate the 2024 flood consequences, the
Kazakh Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, together with local
executive bodies, is working to restore hydraulic structures and protective
dams damaged by the disaster. A total of 27 out of 56 projects have been
completed in 2024, while the remaining 29 are scheduled for commissioning in
2025,» said Gulzat Makhayeva, chief expert of the Hydraulic Structures
Department at the Kazakh Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.
Preparations for the flood season are
proceeding systematically. To accommodate potential high water levels,
reservoirs in the central, northern, eastern, and western regions of the
country are being cleared to ensure sufficient storage capacity. Extensive work
is underway, with the relevant ministry set to reduce the water levels in each
reservoir to 70 percent by April 1.
«In spring, it is crucial not only to collect
flood water in reservoirs, but also to direct it to lake systems, natural
pastures, and meadows. Therefore,
proper water distribution planning should be done in advance. This year, the requests
of farmers and other water users were fully met. During the past irrigation season, nearly 11 billion
cubic meters of water were supplied to farms across the country. Also, significant efforts have
been made to preserve and restore large and small water bodies,» noted Yerys
Ismailov, chief expert of the Committee for Regulation, Protection and Use of
Water Resources.
