Kazakhstan focuses on domestic pharmaceutical industry

Kazakhstan’s pharmaceutical industry is demonstrating steady growth and strengthening the position of domestic production. Today, more than 200 manufacturers are registered in the country, and over 2,000 product items are supplied to the market under long-term contracts. Investment is also providing momentum for the sector’s development. Projects worth more than 316 billion tenge are being implemented in the country with the launch of new production facilities. Overall, last year the volume of pharmaceutical output exceeded 190 billion tenge, showing positive dynamics. At the same time, with the support of the government and relevant authorities, access to medicines is improving. Price reductions have already been recorded for a number of items - by an average of nearly a quarter. The introduction of a single window principle and digital solutions is accelerating medicine registration and making the market more transparent. This set of measures is aimed at strengthening pharmaceutical security, developing the domestic industry, and improving the quality of medical services. A key focus is on expanding domestic production, attracting investment, and creating a sustainable business environment. To this end, as industry representatives note, the Government, on the instruction of the President, has developed a comprehensive package of support measures for domestic producers, including increasing the share of local manufacturers in the pharmaceutical market to 50 percent.

«We are creating a more predictable environment for major investors looking to build pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities here. Ultimately, these measures will increase the share of domestic producers in Kazakhstan’s market. In fact, this is not just about making medicines more affordable – it is also largely a matter of security. Ensuring access to medicines requires the development of domestic production, and significant work is already underway in this area,» noted Kanat Sharlapayev, Chairman of the Presidium, Atameken National Chamber of Entrepreneurs.

«The President’s state-of-the-nation address highlighted the development of domestic producers to ensure the country’s national security and achieve at least a 50 percent presence of domestic pharmaceutical manufacturers in the market,» said Marina Durmanova, President of the Association for Support and Development of Pharmaceutical Activities.
