Kazakhstan leads Central Asia in key gender
equality indicators, ranking 76th out of 146 countries in the World Economic
Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index. The Senate, an upper house of the Kazakh Parliament,
discussed women’s rights and opportunities at a meeting of the parliamentary
commission for monitoring the implementation of national sustainable
development goals. According to statistics, women currently make up more than
50% of the civil service and small and medium-sized businesses, and they
represent 51% of the country’s total population. Senate Speaker Maulen
Ashimbayev emphasized that creating opportunities for women to fully realize
their potential is a top priority for the state. Therefore, women should be
actively involved in public, political, and business sectors.
«The
family and gender policies concept until 2030 was updated by the decree of Head
of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Under his instructions, liability for domestic
violence was tightened last year, following coordinated efforts by members of Parliament,
the government, and the civil sector,» said Senate Chairman Maulen Ashimbayev.
