Kazakh schools to introduce new nutrition standards on September 1

Starting in the new academic year, school cafeterias in Kazakhstan will operate under revised nutrition standards. According to an order signed by the Health Minister, fast food, coffee, cream-filled pastries, and other sweets are now banned. School students will also not be served dishes made from pork, lamb, or beef. Meals will be prepared without salt, sauces, mayonnaise, or ketchup. The list of prohibited items includes fermented dairy products, including kefir and cottage cheese, as well as juices and flavored water. The menu will feature traditional Kazakh dishes such as syrne with beef, zhent, and kurt, along with healthy options such as yogurt, compote, vegetable platters, and baked goods made from whole grain and gluten-free flour. Notably, 75% of the menu will be plant-based, including vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds.
