Kazakh PM inspects North Kazakhstan region’s flood preparations

The «Unified infrastructure of drones» project is being implemented in the North Kazakhstan region. Starting this year, it is set to be used for monitoring and transmitting information on the region’s flood situation. The technological solution, incorporating elements of artificial intelligence, was presented to Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov during his working trip to the region. He was shown the progress of the reconstruction and equipment of the pumping station of the first lift, which is equipped with two pumps capable of operating both in dry and underwater environments. Bektenov also reviewed the readiness of equipment designed to protect against possible flood waters. To prevent overflows in the city, protective dams are planned to be installed, along with the construction of a bridge over the Ishim River. The Prime Minister also visited the Sergeyev hydrosystem, which plays a key role in flood protection for settlements and ensuring water supply for local residents.

«By 2025, 20.3 million tenge will be allocated for flood prevention measures. These funds will be used to supply about 1,000 square meters of rubble stones, and work in this area will continue. Overall, two reservoirs are prepared for floods this year, with no risk of flooding,» said Shugaip Ibatullin, Director of the North Kazakhstan branch of Kazvodkhoz.

National meeting on flood season preparations held in Petropavl

During his working visit to the region, Bektenov held a national meeting on preparations for the flood period. Digital solutions were presented at the meeting, including the new Tasqyn flood forecasting information system. It is modelling floods at 142 gauging stations along 128 river sections. Additionally, operational reports on water releases from reservoirs have been automated and integrated with the global flood warning system GloFAS, enabling early risk notifications. Currently, over 1,200 settlements in the country are located in flood-prone zone. To protect them, 576 kilometers of protective dams have been built, and 822 kilometers of drainage systems, canals, and ditches have been repaired or built. Furthermore, 960 culverts have been installed along road and railway networks. Work has also been carried out on dangerous sections of 74 rivers, where about 500 kilometers of riverbeds have been deepened. Following the meeting, Bektenov gave a number of instructions.

«The beginning of spring is expected to be warm and rainy. We must be prepared for any situation. I instruct you to visit every settlement and establish regional commissions that will comprehensively analyze the current situation and take appropriate measures. As in the previous year, a national headquarters must be set up to coordinate flood control measures and eliminate the consequences of flooding. Local authorities and relevant agencies need to complete preparations for the flood period by early March,» Bektenov noted.
