Kazakh peacekeepers awarded medals for participation in UN mission

139 Kazakh service members and four staff officers were awarded United Nations medals. The awards were presented by Ghanaian Major General Anita Asmah, Commander of the peacekeeping mission. She and UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix commended the high level of combat training and discipline demonstrated by the Kazakh service members. The Kazakh peacekeeping contingent serves at the Faouar base, carrying out tasks to maintain the ceasefire on the Golan Heights, Syria. Additionally, the troops provide security, reinforce the defense of UN bases, and engage with the local population. Over the past 11 months, the peacekeepers have defused approximately 200 unexploded ordnance. In December last year, during the evacuation of UN personnel from a hazardous area, the contingent demonstrated a high level of efficiency and professionalism.

«The Kazakh peacekeeping contingent is tasked with patrolling the area of responsibility, evacuating personnel from UN bases and posts within the zone, and conducting medical evacuations in case of injury or illness. Another key mission is locating and neutralizing unexploded ordnance. Over the past 11 months, the contingent has carried out over 500 such operations,» said Lieutenant Colonel Zhiger Aipov, commander of the peacekeeping company.
