The construction of a
nuclear power plant will provide the country with a number of benefits. First
and foremost, it will reduce the electricity shortage, curb the rise in tariff
prices, improve the environment, and ensure energy independence, according to Sergey
Ponomarev, a member of the Mazhilis, the Lower House of the Kazakh Parliament. He
noted that a nuclear power plant is an important and necessary project for
Kazakhstan's economy. The issue of its construction has been under
consideration for a long time. Back then, the location selected for the plant was
in the vicinity of Lake Balkhash. Moreover, IAEA experts confirmed that there
are no factors preventing the construction of a nuclear power plant in this
area. The country has both research institutes and highly qualified
specialists.
«We are now discussing the constructive power of
nuclear energy, which is enormous. It is both useful and necessary. The
Institute of Nuclear Physics, employing 400 people, is fully capable of
preparing specialists to work at an operating plant. They will be trained not
on abstract simulators, but on an operating reactor. In addition, Kazatomprom
is a major company that extracts uranium in the South Kazakhstan and Kyzylorda
regions and employs highly qualified personnel, including physicists. The Ulba
Metallurgical Plant (UPM) in Oskemen produces fuel pellets for nuclear power
plants, which we currently export. Furthermore, we are the world’s largest
producer of uranium and rank second in uranium reserves,» said Sergey
Ponomarev, member of the Mazhilis, the Lower House of the Kazakh Parliament.
