Kazakh Mazhilis approves amendments to EAG agreement

Today, members of the Mazhilis, the Lower House of the Kazakh Parliament, ratified amendments to the Agreement on the Eurasian Group on Combating Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism (EAG). The document clarifies the group’s goals and objectives, as well as modifies the procedure for forming and executing its budget. Additionally, it introduces new terms and concepts. From now on, the EAG members will also work to counter the financing of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The organization comprises Kazakhstan, Belarus, China, the Kyrgyz Republic, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and India.

«The Protocol supplements the text of the agreement with the words «financing of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.» In addition, it clarifies the sources of the EAG budget formation and introduces other technical amendments. Seven out of nine EAG member states have ratified the Protocol. Kazakhstan and China are currently conducting domestic ratification procedures,» noted Zhenis Yelemessov, Deputy Chairman of the Financial Monitoring Agency.
