Kazakh citizens are increasingly registering intellectual property rights. Last year, the registration authority received 13,500 submissions, marking a 50 percent increase compared to 2022. The figure has grown by nearly 30 percent in the first four months of 2024, as reported by in an interview with Silk Way TV channel. According to the head of the organization under the Ministry of Justice, in recent years, the country has been focusing on promoting geographical indications that have been patentable since 2022. To date, a total of six objects have undergone registration, and seven more are in progress, including two types of Aral soap, Bakanas rice, Talgar pear, Narynkol potato, and others.
“Why is this necessary? The Head of State sets tasks to promote domestic products, agricultural producers, and in general, the recognition and branding of Kazakhstan’s regions in the global markets to boost the country’s investment potential, attractiveness, and make it more recognizable. Notably, all our regions are rich in history, traditions, and products. We are conducting extensive legal information campaign and activities to ensure that each region can present its products,” said Yerbol Ospanov, Director of the National Institute of Intellectual Property of the Kazakh Ministry of Justice.
