Intellectual property rights protection in Kazakhstan under special control

Geographical indications have become increasingly common in the names of goods in Kazakhstan. Since the start of the year, the National Institute of Intellectual Property has received over 170 applications for registration, with 38 already approved and the rest under consideration. Among the new geographical indications already recognized by consumers are Talgar pear, Narynkol potato, Kokshetau ice cream, and Kostanai honey. This was announced during a briefing by representatives of the Kazakh Ministry of Justice. In addition to improving intellectual property rights protection, the country is also advancing international partnerships for their safeguarding. A corresponding agreement was signed this year with Singapore. As a member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Kazakhstan is actively participating in the Union's efforts to identify such violations and combat counterfeit products. Over 60 million counterfeit goods have been seized across the EAEU member states in the past five years.

«Testing of the unified customs register of intellectual property objects is now nearing completion, and the process of creating a system for registering trademarks and appellations of origin is at the final stage. We are consistently following this path and creating the appropriate legal framework so that the efforts of the member states are synchronized to a certain extent. Taking this into account, of course, all these measures will be more effective,» noted Ernar Bakenov, Director of the Business Development Department of the Eurasian Economic Commission.
