12 percent of all electricity produced in Kazakhstan by 2035 may come from nuclear power. Achieving this goal, experts say, will help nuclear power plants with a total capacity of 2, 4 GW. The new source of basic generation, as reported by the Ministry of Energy, will eliminate the existing deficit and fully meet the needs of consumers. In other words, the new nuclear power plant will make the domestic energy system independent. Kazakhstan has all the potential for the development of nuclear energy, experts say. The country is the world leader in terms of natural uranium, services for its isotopic enrichment are now available. Last year, an enterprise for the production of finished nuclear fuel for Chinese nuclear power plants was opened on the basis of the Ulba Metallurgical Plant. Now, professionals in the field are conducting comprehensive research work to improve the industry.
“At present, studies are being carried out in Kazakhstan on the possibility of developing nuclear energy based on natural and climatic factors and the possibility of the impact of nuclear power plants on the environment. An active study of 6 world suppliers of nuclear technologies is underway. These are US, US-Japanese, Korean, Russian, Chinese and French technologies,” said Zhaslan Kassenov, Chief of Staff, Kazakh Ministry of Energy.
