April 12 marks Cosmonautics Day

Today, April 12, marks the Cosmonautics Day. It is a special date for Kazakhstan, from where the first manned flight into space took place in 1961 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. 30 years later, the first Kazakh cosmonaut Toktar Aubakirov set off to conquer the galaxy. This moment marked the beginning of implementing the space research program of Kazakhstan. People’s Hero of Kazakhstan Toktar Aubakirov spoke about his journey into space at a meeting with students from the ‘Zhas Sarbaz’ movement.

“I am very happy. Why? Because when I meet such cadets, I see their excitement, sparkle in their eyes. I am very proud that they want to be like me, that I’m an example for them. My heart is full of patriotic feelings at such moments,” said Toktar Aubakirov, the First Kazakh Cosmonaut.

“We organized the meeting with Toktar Aubakirov on the eve of the Cosmonautics Day, so that our students could learn firsthand about the history that is not written in books and could dream of becoming the same pilots as Toktar Ongarbayuly,” said Yerassyl Abikenov, Deputy Chairperson, Nur-Sultan branch of Zhas Sarbaz movement.
