349 suspects in the January events case are held in custody. They took an active part in the pogroms, arson of buildings, theft of firearms, armed attacks on state facilities and security personnel. This was reported by Yeldos Kilymzhanov, Deputy Head of the First Service of the Prosecutor General’s Office. He noted that there was sufficient evidence of criminal involvement for each person arrested.
“To date, over 30,000 investigative procedures have been carried out in eight regions of the country. Over 4,000 forensic examinations have been appointed. In total, 429 criminal cases were taken to court following January events, in which 545 persons were convicted. 83 defendants who had committed serious crimes of violence against government officials and destruction of property were sentenced to jail terms,” Kilymzhanov said.
In addition, according to the Kazakh Interior Ministry, the property stolen from citizens and businesses has been confiscated. Its value was estimated at over 343 million tenge. The list includes 12 vehicles, 319 units of household appliances, 189 pieces of jewelry, 286 cell phones and 550 clothing sets, as well as over 16 million tenge. The internal affairs agencies continue intensive work on the search and recovery of previously stolen weapons during the mass riots.
