10th BAIQONYR International Film Festival kicks off in Almaty

The 10th BAIQONYR International Debut and Short Film Festival has opened in Almaty. This year, hundreds of films were submitted to the competition, with the best selected for screening. The feature debut section includes five films from Russia, Uzbekistan, Georgia, and Tajikistan. According to the organizers, such diversity of films from different countries expands boundaries and showcases the potential of young directors. The festival opened with Crickets, It’s Your Turn directed by Olga Korotko, a co-production of Kazakhstan and France.

«A total of about 800 submissions were received for the festival, with over 100 selected for the competition. As part of the BAIQONYR festival, these films will be judged in categories such as Best Film, Screenplay, Directing, and others,» said Yerzhan Jumabekov, Program Director of the BAIQONYR Film Festival.

«A new project is launching at BAIQONYR - the Almaty Series Festival. The opening will feature a screening of Kazakh Scary Tales by Adilkhan Yerzhanov. This promises to be a vibrant and remarkable highlight of BAIQONYR. As is already tradition, the 4th Almaty Forum of Film Critics of the CIS countries, a truly unique event, will also take place,» noted Anuar Kenzhibayev, President of the BAIQONYR Film Festival.

As part of the festival, the Critics Lab creative workshop has opened. Here, students will learn to write reviews, analyze film scenes, and conduct interviews. The program also includes competition screenings, lectures, and master classes. Notably, the BAIQONYR film forum will run until September 26.
