The carpet weaving competition titled «Elegance in Secrets»
took place in the capital of Turkmenistan, featuring 14 artisans from all
regions of the country. Over three stages, participants showcased their skills.
In the beginning, they exhibited finished products, demonstrating their weaving
techniques. In the final round, contestants performed poems and songs using the
national musical instrument dutar. The winners were talented representatives
from the Ahal region. Notably, Turkmen carpet weaving was inscribed on the
UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019.
«We tried very hard to make this competition a real
celebration of mastery, and it seems we succeeded. The main goal is to pass on
to young people the subtle and sacred secrets of carpet weaving. After all, it
is part of our soul and our history, and witnessing young girls strive for
perfection in their work is truly priceless,» said Ogulmaral Amandzhanova,
chief specialist at the Turkmenhaly State Association.
«The carpets woven by
our skilled girls decorate our weddings and homes. Carpet weaving was passed
down from grandmothers and mothers, and I also learned this craft from my
mother. I taught it to my daughters and want to pass this knowledge on to my
grandchildren in the future,» noted craftswoman Bakhargul Gylydzhova.
