Turkistan city is set to be
granted special status. Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov has signed a
decree to submit a relevant draft law to the Mazhilis, a Lower House of the
Parliament, for consideration. The document outlines the legal framework for
the formation, development, and functioning of the city as a spiritual,
cultural, and historical center of the country, as well as recognizing its
nationwide significance. The bill provides for the development and promotion of
Turkistan as a spiritual, cultural, historical and tourist center. The main
focus will be on protecting the city’s key landmarks, including the Mausoleum
of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction and economic
activities that could pose a threat to the ancient structure will be
prohibited. Additionally, there are plans to establish a special reserve to
preserve the integrity, authenticity, and value of the archaeological monuments
for future generations.
