A training center for radiation safety in medicine has
opened in the Kazakh capital at Astana Medical University. Medical physicists,
radiologists, dosimetrists, and nurses working directly with radioactive
sources will enhance their qualifications there. For this purpose, specialists
of the Research Institute of Radiobiology and Radiation Protection underwent
special training as part of the cooperation with the International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA), which also provided funds for the purchase of necessary
equipment for the center.
«This center was established as part of an IAEA project. Our
specialists underwent advanced training in Europe. In collaboration with IAEA
experts, training programs were developed, and the latest generation of
ultra-sensitive dosimeters and phantom test devices for quality control in
medicine were purchased,» said Meirat Bakhtin, Director of the Institute of
Radiobiology and Radiation Protection at the Astana Medical University.
Notably, the training center will be the first and only
institution in Central Asia to offer such courses, including practical training
for specialists in nuclear medicine. It will also develop national standards to
ensure the protection of medical personnel and patients from ionizing
radiation. Additionally, two new research institutes have been established to
advance scientific knowledge in other fields. The heart rhythm institute will
study diseases of the human body’s most vital organ, while the institute of
respiratory medicine will focus on researching diseases related to the
respiratory system.
«This year, our National Society of Respiratory
Medicine joined the European Respiratory Society. We have signed a memorandum
and are exploring a range of projects for joint implementation. We are also
collaborating with various other universities and countries in the CIS,
including Belarus, Russia, the Kyrgyz Republic, and others,» noted Natalya
Latypova, Director of the Research Institute of Respiratory Medicine at the
Astana Medical University.
