The monument to the Indian national hero was unveiled in Astana. The statue of Mahatma Gandhi was placed at the embankment. The solemn ceremony was attended by diplomats and consuls of both countries. Indian Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture Meenakshi Lekhi noted that after 30 years of diplomatic relations, the two countries continue strengthening the bilateral ties. The installation of the sculpture is a symbol of friendship. It shows the intention to further continue mutual cooperation.
“On my last visit, I had requested them to give visa-free regime for the Indian tourists. And, immediately they acted upon. And, they had given the 14-days visa-free regime to the Indian tourists. I must thank Kazakh authorities for that also,” Lekhi said.
“In response to the opening of the monument to Abai Kunanbaiuly in New Delhi this summer, we decided to erect the monument to Mahatma Gandhi in Astana. I think it has a symbolic meaning for the relationship and cooperation of the two countries. We have well-established cultural and economic relations, and I believe this event will contribute to their further development,” shared Serik Zharasbayev, Kazakh Vice Minister of Culture and Sports.
