A total of 252.5 billion tenge has been
allocated for the development of science in Kazakhstan this year, which is six
times more than in the past six years. According to the Science Development
Concept, funding will be increased to 1% of GDP by 2029. Overall, the number of
young scientists in the country is growing, with their share now reaching 46%.
Every year, they undergo internships at leading scientific centers worldwide.
This was announced by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov at a government meeting. He
emphasized that branches of foreign universities should play a key role in advancing
science and integrating Kazakhstan into the global academic community. He also
instructed the relevant ministry to intensify efforts to attract such
institutions to the country. Bektenov believes that the creation of science-intensive
areas, or science cities, could provide a significant boost to technological
and innovative development. The total contribution of scientific projects to
the country’s economy has exceeded 118 billion tenge. Since 2016, Kazakhstan
has held six competitions aimed at commercializing scientific developments.
Currently, 208 projects are being implemented across the country, 25 of which
are being exported, while six have reached sales volumes exceeding 1 billion
tenge.
«Science should contribute to the opening of
new high-tech export-oriented enterprises. It is necessary to foster the level
of commercialization of scientific developments. Businesses should be supported
in localizing production and developing new technologies for export products.
Each institute or university should have a partner represented by a large
enterprise that will provide targeted orders and co-finance expenses. To
stimulate business investment in science, tax incentives were introduced from
January 1, 2025,» Bektenov noted.
