Referendum - foundation of nationwide dialogue

The decision regarding the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan lies with the people. Every important step for the life of the country must be made with the support of the people. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized this during his state-of-the-nation address, announcing October 6 as the date for the nationwide referendum. According to experts, this initiative represents a real triumph of political democracy and serves an example of building a sustainable nationwide dialogue, laying a strong foundation for the successful development of the country's socio-political culture.

«If we recall the previous referendum, for example, about 68 percent of the population exercised this right. Voter turnout has consistently been quite high for both elections and referendums. Overall, this indicates that people are quite active and engaged in the electoral process. This is a strategic issue that concerns each of us, as well as our future and that of our generations. It is both an economic and environmental issue,» said Aidana Akessina, spokesperson for the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies.
