Astana today has become the center of global spiritual dialogue, bringing together distinguished representatives of various faiths from around the world for the 8th Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions - one of the largest in the forum’s history. In his address, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted that the current global situation is marked by rising tensions, with growing conflicts, trade wars, and a new arms race. The only way to counter these challenges is through open and constructive dialogue. In this regard, great hopes are placed on religious leaders, who bear the responsibility of strengthening trust among people. The Head of State also outlined Kazakhstan’s vision for advancing interfaith and intercultural dialogue.
«I propose discussing my earlier initiative for a “Movement for Peace” under the auspices of the Congress. Religious leaders could serve as the moral foundation of this movement, issuing a neutral, non-politicized appeal to end violence and to seek peaceful solutions. Grounded in the universal values of the sanctity of life, compassion, and mercy, this initiative has the potential to unite not only broad communities of believers but also politicians, representatives of international organizations, non-governmental institutions, experts, and, of course, young people,» Tokayev said.
Global concerns also extend to the risks of nuclear conflict and environmental catastrophe. President Tokayev proposed drafting a joint document on the role of spiritual leaders in tackling climate change. He also addressed the issue of upholding ethical standards in the context of a new technological era, defined by the widespread use of artificial intelligence and big data.
«I propose establishing an Interfaith Commission on
the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence Development, tasked with drafting
universal principles for the responsible use of neural networks and other
groundbreaking technologies. These principles would serve as a kind of
“commandments for algorithms,” underscoring respect for human dignity, the
inadmissibility of discrimination, and oversight of decisions with far-reaching
consequences,» he added.
Moreover, the importance of humanitarian assistance
should not be overlooked, President Tokayev noted. Support must be provided to
those in need, as exemplified by the Islamic Organization for Food Security,
established on Kazakhstan’s initiative. He once again highlighted Kazakhstan as
an example. Around 4,000 religious organizations representing 18 different
faiths operate peacefully across the country. The foundation of Kazakhstan’s
model of tolerance is the principle of “unity in diversity.” Today, the Head of
State presented a number of forum participants with state awards, the honorary
Congress medal, Goodwill Ambassador badges, and the Astana International Prize
for their contributions to interfaith dialogue.
