Over six billion cubic meters of water provided to Kazakh farmers in irrigation season

Over six billion cubic meters of water have been provided to Kazakh farmers during the irrigation season. According to the country’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, relevant agreements were signed with more than 23,000 domestic agricultural producers. Over four billion cubic meters of water have been delivered to the country via the Syrdarya River. A corresponding agreement was previously reached with Uzbekistan to supply 3.7 billion cubic meters of water to Kazakhstan within six months. This volume was delivered in four months. The neighboring country will send another 500 million cubic meters of water by the end of the irrigation period. All the work is being done to ensure an uninterrupted water supply for farmers’ needs. As noted by the relevant ministry, significant work was done before the irrigation period. Besides, water diplomacy has also been strengthened. Farmers in the south of the country are already preparing for the second harvest.

«Thanks to ongoing negotiations and prior agreements with the neighboring country, 90 cubic meters of water per second are currently being supplied to the country through the Dostyk canal. The water level in the Shardara reservoir stands at 1.5 billion cubic meters, which is about 500 million cubic meters more than last year. 4.5 billion cubic meters of water have been sent from the Shardara reservoir into the lower course of the Syrdarya River, an increase of one billion cubic meters compared to last year. Over 850 million cubic meters of water have been directed into the Kyzylkum canal, and more than 590 million cubic meters have been sent to the Northern Aral Sea,» said Almas Mussabekov, spokesperson for the Kazakh Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.
