Over 150 scientists discuss trends in nanotechnology and energy systems in Astana

The 12th International Conference on Nanomaterials and Advanced Energy Storage Systems (INESS-2024) is currently taking place in Astana. Scientists from Kazakhstan, Japan, Germany, China, South Korea, the UK, and Russia are discussing promising trends in the battery industry. The conference primarily focuses on methods to increase the energy density of batteries while maintaining their minimal volume and weight, as well as improving the safety and environmental friendliness of technologies during production. Innovations in this area can significantly reduce battery costs and ensure the reliability of energy storage systems in the future, experts say. The conference serves as a platform for active collaboration between domestic scientists and students from Nazarbayev University and representatives of the international scientific community.

«The conference has expanded. Initially, we started it as a conference on batteries, but now it includes sections on sensors, semiconductors, hydrogen energy, renewable energy, and other fields. Kazakhstan has a lot of important materials for lithium-ion batteries, primarily nickel. We are one of the largest producers of nickel-containing materials in the world. Our group at Nazarbayev University has technologies that we are currently offering to companies,» said Zhumabay Bakenov, research supervisor of the International Research Group at Nazarbayev University.

«We have used some device, like a battery, to store the energy to utilize it effectively and safely. In terms of materials, Kazakhstan has very strong point in natural resources, like lithium, nickel, some transition metals. Thus, there are many cooperation strategies between two countries, Korea and Kazakhstan,» said Sung-Soo Kim, professor at Chungnam National University.
